We are so excited about going to the Historical Society tomorrow! It will be chilly again, so please make sure kids have all their warm gear. We have library time and our spelling test, and we're celebrating a birthday too - a big day!
Today we used a mobile computer lab, and we were all able to log on successfully!! Students went to the McGraw Hill portal, where they explored all of the Wonders books and games. Have you tried this at home?? It's the perfect resource for when your child is out sick! Students can log in and see their spelling words, reading group books, and more! If you need me to send home another login card, let me know!

Today we started a new center - engineering! We are building a railroad from New Boston to Boston, just like long ago!
Our class is very interested in trains! We learned that New Boston had it's own railroad from 1893-1931. We are doing some research about trains and this time in New Boston's history. If you happen to have any good train books that we could borrow, please label them with your name and send them in! Thank you!!
We had a blast today reading and sharing about life "long ago" versus life today. Talk with your child about how things are different now than they were when you were growing up! We are looking forward to our trip to the Historical Society on Friday. Please send in your child's permission slip if you have not already.
Thank you! We saw a special presentation by the 5th grade this morning - A Tribute to Civil Rights Day. Ask your child about it!
Tomorrow is our library day, so remember to send books back! It is also our spelling test day, so go over those tricky words tonight! Today we compared two versions of The Mitten using a Venn Diagram. We also got to go sledding at lunch recess!
We learned about cause and effect relationships today.
For example- Cause: It was freezing cold outside. Effect: We had indoor recess! We are reading and comparing folk tales this week. Today we read a funny story called Interrupting Chicken. Ask your child about it!
Be sure to check your child's folder today! It's full of school news - including a permission slip for a field trip we're taking on Friday, February 1st to the New Boston Historical Society! We have started Unit 5 in our Everyday Math program, which focuses heavily on understanding place value. We grew sprouts in our classroom this week! Some brave students taste-tested the sprouts and loved them! Students took home their own little container of sprouts so they can watch them grow at home. Enjoy!
Our movie and stuffy day was lots of fun! Today we practiced long i words, learned about plurals, and retold several stories with the proper sequencing. In our reading groups, we were focusing on fluency and expression. Tomorrow is our library day, so if your child brought his or her book home, please send it in tomorrow! Thanks!
Today we read a book called The Sun - A Superstar! Ask your child what he or she knows about the sun. There is information about Jump Rope for Heart in your child's folder today.
We are very excited to enjoy a reward for good behavior tomorrow! We will be watching The Magic School Bus - Lost in Space while snuggling with stuffed animals. Your child may bring ONE stuffed animal tomorrow that fits in his or her backpack. Did you hear that we reached our dojo goal?? We have earned over 9,000 points since the beginning of the school year! Our reward is a "movie and stuffy" day, which will be this Thursday. So each student may bring one stuffed animal that fits in his or her backpack on Thursday.
Our gardening theme basket looks good - but not great. If you are able to send in any garden-related donations by Thursday, please do! Thank you!!! We have been learning about the relationship between the Sun, Earth, and Moon, looking for predictable patterns. Ask your child what causes night and day! We are also reading and writing this week about how plants change as they grow. Today each student started his or her own seeds to try and grow sprouts. We will make sure they have just the right amount of water and sunlight so they can germinate and grow!
We have a spelling test tomorrow, so please study those long a words if you have not already. We also have library tomorrow, so if your child brought his or her book home, please put it in the backpack tonight!
Tomorrow students may wear Patriots gear if they so choose!!! Go Pats! We made magic kits today! Your child can now magically change "can" to "cane" with his magic e wand!
Today we learned a new math game called Fishing for Tens, which is like Go Fish, except instead of finding matching pairs, students are looking for compliments of ten. So if a student has an 8, she may ask her partner for a 2 in order to have a set that has a sum of ten. We are trying to master these facts, as they can help us solve other facts!
We began Unit 3 in our Wonders program today! This unit is all about changes over time. Today we read the book A Second is a Hiccup by Hazel Hutchins.
Happy Birthday, Wilson! We made Wilson's birthday book today!
We traced our shadows on the pavement this morning, and then went back to the same spot this afternoon to see how our shadows changed. Ask your child about it! Today we began a study of the Earth's relationship to the Sun by looking at shadows. We did a fun activity to determine if a statue's shadow can move. Ask your child to explain why a shadow can move even when the object is stationary!
Happy New Year!! We shared and learned about New Year's traditions today, and we even made resolutions. Ask your child what his or her goal is for 2019!
We are reviewing sight words this week and focusing heavily on math and science. Next week, we will go back to our Wonders program with new spelling words and literature. |
