We read about people who help us this week, so today we made thank you cards for someone who helps us. We also learned about the summer reading program at the town library. Information went home in your child's folder. Enjoy the weekend!

Once again, I was sooo proud of the Shining Diamonds for their respectful behavior! Ask your child about the Memorial Day Program that we had this morning.
Today we wrapped up our oviparous animal unit, and we are getting ready for the final science unit of the year - the rocky shore! Please look for a permission slip that went home today for our field trip to Odiorne Point! Today we learned more about Memorial Day. Students brought home a Memorial Day paper book. Have your student read the book to you! Talk with your child about what Memorial Day means to you and your family. If possible, have your child wear red, white, and/or blue for the Memorial Day Program tomorrow!
We had so much fun at Pete the Cat - the Musical!! The NBCS students were the most well behaved of all the kids there! I was so proud of the safe, respectful, and responsible behavior!
We have been reading lots of Pete the Cat stories this week, to get pumped up for our trip to the theater on Tuesday! We are so excited to see Pete the Cat - the Musical!
Today was our last day with the chicks. Big thank you to the Campbell family for giving them a happy home! Today we had our last Social Thinking session with Ms. Dana, and students reflected on their own behaviors. They thought about their "Unthinkable Team," and how to defeat them. Talk with your child about it!
We also did a VERY fun activity this afternoon called Chick Town! Ask your child about it! Today in math, we worked on mentally adding sets of tens to numbers. For example, now students are expected to know that 32 + 10 = 42 because they add one ten in the tens place. Can your child add multiples of ten to a number?
55 + 20? 48 + 30? Try it out! We are happy to have 4 healthy chicks in our classroom this week! They hatched on Sunday, but I was able to get video so all students were able to see the magic! Today each student was able to hold a chick! It was awesome!! Ask your child about it!
We worked on telling time again today, we worked on computers in the library, and we candled our eggs again. We are getting so excited for hatch day! We HOPE chicks will start to hatch on Monday!
We learned about telling time to the half-hour today! Talk with your child about telling time!
There were ducklings hatching next door to us today! How "egg"citing!
This week is a review and assessment week for us, so we will not have new spelling words or a spelling test. I sent home a list of all the sight words that your child should know at this point, so instead of working on spelling words this week, it would be beneficial to your child if you practice any words on that list that your child has not yet mastered.
We candled our eggs again today, we learned more about oviparous animals, and we watched as a mommy peregrine falcon fed her chicks! There a webcam in a falcon's nest in Manchester, NH that you can check here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k90rwy-9DSQ Our essential question this week was "How do things get built?" and we read about how ships are made. So it was the perfect time to have an engineering boat-building challenge! Students built boats that could float and hold weight. Ask your child if he or she was successful and how many pennies his or her boat could hold!
Happy Mother's Day to all of you Shining Diamonds moms!! Today we were lucky enough to have another expert from the community come in to our class to teach us about eggs. Mrs. Judd helped us to candle our chicken eggs today! Ask your child what candling means! Also, it looks as though we will hatch 5 chicks on or around the 20th of May. If any of you Shining Diamond families are interested in adopting our chickens, please let me know!
Ask your child about the awesome presentation we had today from Sue Makowiecki, a biologist and egg expert!
Today we worked on fractions again in math. The students now know about dividing things equally into halves or fourths. Ask your child - If you and I were to split a pancake equally, how much of the pancake would you get?
Today we also learned a very cool science word - OVIPAROUS. Ask your child what he or she knows about oviparous animals! Thank you so much to everyone who came out to the Open House and Circus on Friday! What a fun night!
Today we planted evergreen trees at a site up Old Coach Road - right across from the ball fields. The children each planted 2 trees, and ~if all goes well~ they will be able to check on and care for their trees each year, and even harvest one as a Christmas Tree once they are in 6th grade! So cool! Tomorrow is our big circus day!!! We have had a blast practicing with Troy Wunderle and trying out all of his special circus equipment, like pogo sticks, spinning plates, etc. Students are expected to wear dark pants and a tight shirt tomorrow. The shirt that your child wears tomorrow will become his or her undershirt, as we will be wearing our class t-shirts on top for the performances. After the evening performance, I will be collecting the students' class shirts back so that we have them for other end-of-year activities.
Also- PLEASE CHECK YOUR CHILD'S FOLDER TODAY! There is a permission slip for a field trip that we will take on Monday, May 6th. Please sign the permission slip and send it in ASAP! Thank you!! I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow at 5:00 for Open House! We are getting so excited for our show!! Our class shirts are in, and we are looking forward to wearing them for our performances on Friday. Students should wear dark colored pants on Friday and a tank top or fitted t-shirt to wear underneath the class shirt. That way, we can take the class shirts off after each performance so I can hang onto them and keep them safe for the next time we all wear them as a group!
