What a fantastic PE class we had today! Students participated in the spider obstacle course! Ask your child about it!
Tomorrow is a big day. Please make sure your child brings his or her costume to school in a bag. No weapons are allowed! We will change into costumes between 12:30 and 12:45. The parade begins at 1:00. Thank you to everyone who signed up to send in supplies for our celebration! After the parade we will enjoy some afternoon snacks before dismissal. Happy Monday! It's all about spiders this week in first grade! We are reading fiction and nonfiction stories about spiders, we are illustrating our own spider stories, and we even started making toy spiders this afternoon! We will be looking at how different spiders move and comparing that to how people move, as our essential question this week in our Wonders program is "How does your body move?"
We counted all of the seeds in our pumpkins this morning! Ask your child what strategy we used so we could keep track of counting such a large number of seeds. We read some Pumpkin Pal stories about friendship. Students practiced showing respect for different opinions by saying, "I respect that!" We learned how to log onto laptop computers today during our library time. The first part of your student's school username is 30 - because that is his or her year of graduation! Can you believe your child will graduate from high school in 2030???
We visited the fire safety trailer today! Ask your child what he or she learned about fire safety! We also made pumpkin predictions - students worked in groups and predicted how much their pumpkin weighed, how many inches it measured around, and how many seeds were inside. Then we weighed, measured, and cut those pumpkins open! The students scooped out all of the "guts" and separated out the seeds. Tomorrow we will count the seeds to see if our predictions were correct.
We had our Unit 2 math assessment today, we wrote poems with rhyming words, we did a candy pumpkin building challenge with our buddies, and we read Fall Is Not Easy by Marty Kelley then painted our own funky fall trees.
Today in math we solved number stories, and we had to show three different ways of solving! Students showed how to solve the problem using pictures, a ten frame, and a number line. We practiced finding key details in a story, and we learned about the life cycle of the pumpkin today too!
We are all about friendship this week! We are reading and writing about what friends do together and how friends can get along. Today we read lots of stories about friends - Friends All Around, My New Friend is So Fun!, Friends Are Fun, and Pumpkin Pals! We discussed what character traits are important in a good friend - like patience and kindness.
Tomorrow students may wear Red Sox gear (or any other sport team) to show support for the Red Sox in the World Series! We loved shopping at Michaelmas today! Happy Friday! Enjoy the weekend!
School pictures went home today! Check your child's folder!
Today we read more stories about pets and how to care for them. We even learned about some unusual pets, like iguanas and pot-bellied pigs! We also learned more about how sounds are made. We used string to make "head harps" so we could feel vibrations and hear the sounds they make. Tomorrow is Michaelmas! If you are sending in money for your child, please put it in a baggie with your child's name on it. Thank you!! We have pet rocks! Yesterday, students chose a rock that felt right for them. Today we painted our rocks, named them, made birth certificates, and even made them little beds and leashes and toys. It was so fun! Of course, we wrote about them too. Ask your child about it!
We had a blast at the cardboard challenge this morning! Ask your child what he or she created with cardboard in the library!
Happy Monday! Today we started Week 3 of Unit 1 in our Wonders program - reading and writing about pets and what makes a pet special. Tomorrow we will have a special library session with our 5th grade buddies! We will be doing the cardboard challenge, inspired by a real life story of a child who build an entire arcade out of cardboard boxes! (See below!) We have plenty of boxes to use for this creative activity, but if you happen to have an extra roll of masking tape hanging around your house, we could use some! Thanks! We made the coolest bulletin board display today! Check the dojo for a picture! We also made a birthday book for Jackson!
Happy Weekend! We made our own delicious apple sauce today! Thank you to Jack's mom for helping students peel, core, and slice apples! We also started learning about how sounds are made today. We were sound effects artists, making the sounds of a rainstorm and making the "boing" sound of a ball bouncing in a cartoon! Ask your child how we did it!
What a beautiful day! We finished up a fun project with our 5th grade learning buddies today. Ask your child how he or she learned from a mistake that was made.. how did he or she flip that flop?
Your child brought home his or her Very Hungry Caterpillar Storytelling Kit today!!! Enjoy listening to your child retell this fun story by Eric Carle.
Today we taste-tested apples and voted on our favorite ones! Ask your child about it!
Folders are jam-packed with papers today! Your child has the Wonders letter of the week, a Scholastic Book Order catalogue (you can peruse and then place orders online through the Scholastic tab on the left), and a login information sheet for our online learning opportunities! Today we continued to learn about combinations of ten in math, we made a birthday book for Allyson, and we did lots more Very Hungry Caterpillar storytelling!
Students brought home their Unit 1 math assessment today. Please look at this assessment with your child and praise his or her effort. Work together to fix any mistakes. Fixing mistakes is a great way to learn! We worked with Ten Frames and Rekenreks in math this morning. Ask your child about it!
Tomorrow is our very first spelling test! We have practiced the words a lot in the classroom, and we are excited to show what we know! |
