We have been reading about meerkats in our reading groups this week. Ask your child to tell you about meerkats!
We learned a cool rhyme today, to remember how to properly measure using objects (like toothpicks or paperclips):
If you want to measure your desk or a friend, Use the same unit from end to end. Measurement can be a snap, If you never gap or overlap! We also did some more shadow studies today, and we had extra recess because we reached our goal of 9,ooo dojo points! We had a very fun day! It started with knitting. Each student received his or her very own knitting spool, and everyone got started on their knitting adventure! Knitting is a great activity to strengthen little fingers and help us practice measuring, but it's also just a nice, peaceful choice when there is free time in the classroom. We also started the playground challenge today. Did your child earn a coin at recess?? And this afternoon we started a new science unit about the sun, moon, and stars. In our first few lessons we will be learning about the sun, in particular how its place changes in the sky throughout the day. In today's lesson, your child observed the surprising fact that the shadow of a stationary object moves, even though the object itself is not moving! We learned that this is because of how the sun’s place is changing in the sky.
What a fun Pep Rally today! The purpose for the rally was to let students know that we will have a recess challenge after Thanksgiving break. Students will earn gold coins if they are caught being safe, respectful, and/or responsible at recess. At the rally, students learned some new games and activities that they can play at recess using good sportsmanship. Ask your child about it!
Have a happy Thanksgiving!!! Today we got together with our Learning Buddies to break bread! They made the bread, and we made butter to spread onto it. Yum!
Tomorrow is our Pep Rally! Please wear something blue! It was magazine Monday! We read several different Scholastic News magazines today. We also started some Reader's Theater stories. Instead of reading books in our reading groups this week, we are reading story scripts with a partner or two. It's great practice with fluency and expression in our reading!
Please check your child's folder for a report card! Keep the report card and send the signed envelope back to school next week. Thank you!
We finished our Pilgrim Poem Pumpkin Pouch storytelling kits today! They're awesome! We also did a fun engineering challenge this afternoon. Students tried to make a shelter for three little "pigs" (jumbo marshmallows) out of mini marshmallows and toothpicks. Ask your child about it! Today we had Library AND Social Thinking with Mrs. Dana in the afternoon. Mrs. Dana taught us to be "flexible thinkers" when something is not going exactly as we planned.
Also- If your child participated in the Lions Club vision screening, results were sent home today. Scholastic Book Club magazines were also sent home today. To order books for the holidays, click the link to the left and follow directions to order online. Thanks! We started a new storytelling kit today! We're making Pilgrim Poem Pumpkin Pouches. We also met with our 5th grade learning buddies to continue a project based on choosing kindness. Ask your child to tell you about his or her list of ways to be kind to others.
It was very exciting to have snow to play in at recess time today! Students may play in the snow if they have snow pants and boots in addition to their coat, hat, and gloves/mittens. Today we learned about Frames and Arrows diagrams in math, we read The Three Little Dassies by Jan Brett, and we made a birthday book for the school nurse!
We finished up a Social Studies unit called Pumpkin Pals. In it, students did readings, activities, and reflections on ways to be a kind, caring friend. Your student brought home his or her Pumpkin Pals booklet today. Chat about it!
We rocked at Community Meeting this morning! Our ERASER performance was awesome!
We played bingo with our spelling words and sight words today. I was so proud of how well the students did on their spelling tests - it was a hard week! We learned about Veteran's Day through videos, a magazine, and a paper book. No school tomorrow! Enjoy the long weekend. We practiced our ERASER song in the gym this morning. We feel ready to perform at Community Meeting tomorrow!
We started a new bulletin board inside our classroom today. We are turning Pigeon into a tom turkey! When a student is caught doing an act of kindness, a teacher adds a feather to Pigeon's backside. We will watch his beautiful tail grow as we choose kindness!
The students loved snuggling with stuffies while watching a movie this afternoon as a reward for good behavior. We watched a Scholastic Video Collection that included Click, Clack, Moo - Cows That Type, The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash, The Pigs' Wedding, and Pumpkin Circle! We started a new Wonders unit today! The Big Idea for the next few weeks will be: What makes a community? We will be learning all about community helpers. Today we read a funny story called "Millie Waits for the Mail," in which a cow becomes a community helper! We practiced hopping on the number line to solve number stories in math. We also practiced our ERASER song. We will be performing our song at the Community Meeting on Thursday in the school gym.
We had a very fun day. Each student received an instructional workbook written by one of our favorite author/illustrators: Mo Willems! Through the book, we learned how to draw some of the cool characters from Willems' stories. We also learned about decomposition and soil this afternoon. We observed worms to see how they move! Ask your child about it!
We practiced hopping on the number line in math today. We did a lot of practice finding the key details in the stories we read too. During our library time, students logged onto Learning.Com and they started some computer skills tutorials. They learned how to select items and by clicking and dragging with the mouse!
Happy November! We got a lot of spelling practice in today, and we read our spider stories to our 5th grade learning buddies too. Students brought their spider stories and spider characters home today. Have them tell you their stories! Enjoy!
