Nuts & Bolts
The following are just a few details to make your child’s First Grade Adventure run smoothly...
SUPPLIES:
Your child needs a backpack and a folder for school. Please designate with your child one special pocket folder to be used for homework and notes only. Label it clearly with his/her first and last name. This folder should come to and from school with your child every day. Papers, notices, and homework will be sent home in this folder, in his/her backpack. (Plastic folders tend to hold up well and last all year.) The school provides writing and art tools. It is not necessary for your child to bring these from home.
MASKS:
We will be required to wear masks while our community has a substantial level of COVID transmission. We will wear our masks while indoors, taking physically distanced breathing breaks as often as needed. Please be sure that your child has more than one mask for each school day, as they get gross fast! Please practice mask wearing and tracking with your child. Your child should be comfortable with wearing a mask and fluid in keeping track of it so that enjoying learning can take place.
CLOTHING:
The “layered” look is definitely a smart choice for school. For example, a short sleeve shirt with a sweatshirt over it for the cool mornings. We have recess two times per day, and we also have many outdoor classroom experiences. Students should have a seasonally appropriate change of clothes in their backpacks at all times. Please label ALL of your child’s belongings. Lost and found fills up quickly with everything from mittens to backpacks. Labeling EVERYTHING will save you time, money, and frustration.
FOOD:
Snack time is very important in First Grade. Please make sure that your child has a snack every day. Plan on your child eating healthy things at snack! The children are very hungry when we eat around 9:15. A half of a sandwich and another healthy treat is a good idea. Just make sure your child knows what’s for snack and what’s for lunch! Please see the "Bobcat Cafe" web page for details about hot lunches and other food services offered at NBCS:

Also, I encourage students to drink plenty of water throughout the day!!!
Please send a spill-proof, reusable water bottle in each day to help your student stay hydrated.
CELEBRATIONS:
Birthdays are very special, and we have traditions to make your child’s day extraordinary by focusing on the celebration, not an edible treat.😉 In our classroom, our birthday tradition is to make birthday books. On or near your child's birthday, each classmate will write and draw something sweet and encouraging for your child. Then the pages are put together for a keepsake that your child will treasure for a long time to come!
We will have a few small holiday and reward celebrations during the year. I may reach out for donations and/or help when the time comes so we can work together to make these events fun and memorable!
DISMISSAL:
Before the first day of school, I will need to know your child's usual after school schedule. Please send a note to school with your child if he/she has a change of plans. (For example: Please dismiss Katie with the walkers today. Her dad will pick her up.) If we do not have a note from you, we will dismiss your child according to his/her usual schedule. I am requesting that notes come each day that your child has a change in activity. This includes weekly activities such as gymnastics, scouts, etc. Please do not send an e-mail informing me of a change in plans. Our classroom is a busy learning place, and e-mail often gets checked after the close of school.
Thank you!!! Taking the time to make sure your child is prepared will help ensure that he or she has a comfortable and productive school day!
