STEM Challenge - Design a Boat to Float: Due on Wednesday, May 6th. See directions below, and then share your work on Seesaw!
PLAN:
• Sketch and label your design ideas on a piece of paper.
• What materials will you use?
(Suggested Materials: aluminum foil, pennies or other small weighted
objects, a container or a sink filled with water)
• Label your sketch with the materials that you will need.
DESIGN:
• Build your first boat.
• Test your design.
- Does it float?
- Make improvements if needed.
PLAY:
• Try adding one penny at a time to your boat.
• Can you think of a way to improve your design so that it might hold more weight?
Additional Challenge Idea: try creating a boat using different types of materials (cardboard, styrofoam, etc). What design features work best?
TO DO: Journal Writing: Due on Wednesday, May 6th.
Think about the boat that you built. If you could put yourself into that boat, where would you go? Who would you go with? Write 3 or MORE sentences describing the place you would go and the people that you would go with.
You can do this on SEESAW or You can write this on any paper. Please see the Enrichment tab for paper choices.
Everyday Math
Lesson 8-3
Today’s Skill: Divide shapes into four equal shares and name the shares. Then compare the sizes of the shares to the number of equal shares.
Note to parents: Discuss with your children the idea that the size of an equal share is dependent on the size of the whole. For example, ask if your child would rather share a giant candy bar or a snack-sized candy bar with someone. The bigger the bar, the bigger the piece! Also talk about the idea that increasing the number of shares results in smaller shares. For example, point out that if you shared a candy bar between 2 people, you would get a bigger piece than if 4 people were sharing that same bar.
Go to Lesson 8-3 and click on Boxes: 2 (discuss the Math Message with someone at home), 4 (Partitioning in Fourths), 6 (Math Boxes), and 7 (Home Link).
My Reference Book: To review Fractions and Equal Parts, go to pages 132-133.
To Do: Partitioning Circles - Halves and Fourths
