We had a fantastic Friday! We worked on fact families in math, we started our animal research reports, we had a very successful library time - learning how to print a picture from PebbleGo, and then we ended the day with a fun forsythia project!

Please check your child's folder today! The 2nd trimester report card was sent home. Please take a look and reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Sign and return the envelope. If you would like to have a conference or chat on the phone about your child's progress, please let me know and we can set up a time. All of the Shining Diamonds have made gains and should be very proud of their growth. I am especially proud of how kind and compassionate these students have been. In the Spring, we often see some social/emotional regression. Our class is doing an excellent job utilizing their social skills and problem-solving strategies, and choosing kindness!
There are also Silver Graphics fundraiser order forms in your child's folder. Artwork was sent in and scanned for each student so you can order items with your child's adorable personal touch! Today we began Everyday Math Unit 7. In this unit, children explore the relationship between addition and subtraction, compare different subtraction strategies, and continue to work on fact fluency. They also explore the defining and nondefining attributes of 2-dimensional shapes and continue their work telling time to the nearest hour, using analog and digital clocks. Today we worked on Fact Families, using dominoes. Ask your child about it!
This week we are reading about how people work with animals. We read about guide dogs and how they are trained. Ask your child about it!
Students brought home distraction shields today. ;) In Ms. Dana's Social Thinking class, they learned to think about what distracts them the most and to block that distraction as best they can.
Thank you to everyone who came out to our Family Game Night last night! Playing math games with your kids is a wonderful way to have fun family time while getting some important math practice in!
Happy Spring! Today we looked for signs of Spring (there are daffodils starting to poke up through the soil in the garden!!) and we made acrostic poems about Spring with our 5th grade learning buddies. Tomorrow is World Down Syndrome Day, and to raise awareness and show support, students may wear funky socks! Join us tonight, if you can, for family game night! The intention of this night is to familiarize families with some simple games and activities that can provide practice with important math facts and skills. Many families make reading practice routine each night, but what about math practice?? This night will provide you with ideas to practice math at home and have fun doing it!
We have some very tricky sight words and spelling patterns to learn this week! Please check your child's folder for the Wonders letter!
Today we read about rainbows in a Scholastic News magazine, and then we did an experiment to try and create our own rainbows! All we needed was a clear glass of water and a flashlight... ask your child about it! Today we did a special project - students wrote about someone in their lives who is worth more to them than gold! Have a wonderful weekend! Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Today we practiced using helper facts in math, we became long O detectives during literacy, and we learned all about alligators during our reading groups. In the afternoon, we used the mobile computer lab to log onto and explore Wonders, Everyday Math, and PebbleGo, and then Ms. Dana taught us how making lists can help with our morning routines at home.
We have library and a spelling test tomorrow! We made leprechaun houses (or traps!) with our 5th grade buddies today! Ask your child about it!
We have been learning about animals, their features, and how they survive in nature. Have you heard about our Secret Box challenge? Students are creating boxes that they can put secret stuff inside. They are now adding defense features, inspired by a plant or animal, to their boxes for protection. My box is protected by shark teeth. What will be protecting your child's box??
There is no school tomorrow - VOTING DAY! We had a great time at the Read-A-Thon today! I was so proud of the quiet, respectful behavior of the Shining Diamonds! If your child did not get a chance to and still wants to purchase books from the book fair, it's not too late! Come to the Family Movie Night tonight at the NBCS gym, where the book fair will run from 5-8, and Incredibles 2 will be shown at 6:00!
Tomorrow is pajama/favorite book character day and the Read-A-Thon!
Today we visited the Book Fair! If your child did not have money to spend, he or she may have come home with a wish list. Books can be ordered online or purchased at the PTA movie night tomorrow night. Students brought home math journals today. There are some pages that we skipped here and there, so your child can complete those pages at home for practice!
Welcome back! We are enjoying a school-wide focus on kindness for the month of March. Ask your child about it! We are also starting a new math unit (Everyday Math letters were sent home today) and a new science unit. In science, we will be learning about BIOMIMICRY, which is solving human problems through the inspiration of plants and animals.
