What a fun last few days of school before our holiday break! In addition to some academics, we had a blast playing in the snow, we enjoyed creating cool pictures and gifts, and we warmed our tummies with hot cocoa!

Your child's trimester 1 report card went home in his or her folder. Please take a look, sign and return the envelope, and let me know if you have any questions or concerns. We use standards-based reporting, which means we report on a level of mastery for each particular standard. The "grades" 1-4 indicate how much support your child needs from a teacher to perform a particular skill. Scores of 1 or 2 simply mean that your child still needs quite a bit of support; whereas scores of 3 or 4 indicate that your child is working mostly independently to show mastery of that skill. Please reach out if you'd like to chat!
This week we worked on measuring some more in math, we learned how to cut out paper snowflakes, we decorated the garden area with greens and ribbons, we went on a nature walk and saw animal tracks, we read about where animals live together, and we learned about wants versus needs! It looks as though we are getting some snow tomorrow. If school is closed due to the weather, I will be offering instruction for Thursday's in-school students online via zoom. We will follow the same schedule we did during our quarantine and use the same link: Snow Day Zooms! *8:00-8:30 Morning Meeting/Check In *9:00-9:30 Math Instruction *11:00-11:30 Literacy Instruction *1:00-1:30 Science/Social Studies/End-0f-Day Meeting If your child is usually remote on Thursdays, he or she will still have Seesaw assignments to complete. Enjoy the snow! Love, Mrs. Willard We had a wonderful week!
The snow was lots of fun. Even though it was icy, we had a blast working on a snow fort all week! The students worked together to kick chunks off of the snowbank, to carry heavy blocks of icy snow over to our fort area, and to build the fort and all of its accessories. We read several versions of the "Three Little Pigs" this week, and then we had a special STEM challenge! Students had to make a house for three pigs using toothpicks and marshmallows! It was not easy, but everyone was able to build a structure big enough to fit the three pigs. REMINDER: There is no school tomorrow, Friday, December 4th! No Seesaw work, no zooming... the students get a break. They deserve it! They worked soooooo hard this week!
I could not be more happy and grateful to be back with the students!!! Thank you so much to all of you for everything you are doing to help us stop the spread and keep school going. Learning together is so much better! Your children have settled back into their "normal" school routines this week, and they are totally impressing me with their hard work. We finished Everyday Math Unit 3 and completed the unit assessment. This week, we worked on the short e sound, and we did a bunch of reading and writing about community helpers. We learned how to make our work better by getting feedback and then doing more drafts of our work, attending to more details. Students each drew a hen and wrote a sentence about it. They all got specific suggestions from their peers - like "Maybe you should make the head bigger," or "Adding some background color would look good." Then they did a second draft to see how much their work improved. I was so proud of their progress! Next week we will start Unit 4 in math, which is all about measuring length and addition fact fluency. We will be moving into Wonders Unit 2 Week 2 next week too. The essential question is "What buildings do you know? What are they made of?" We will be focusing on the short u sound for spelling, and we will learn 5 new sight words: live, one, could, three, then. I will be working on report cards tomorrow, and they will be sent home on the 14th and 15th of December. We are beginning our second trimester of school, so we will have new specials starting next week. On Monday and Tuesday we are back with Mrs. Winchell for P.E. class! Please be sure your student has appropriate shoes for gym days. Thank you! Warm Wishes,Jess Willard |
