Our first community meeting of the school year was this morning! We were soooo proud of Isabella, who did an excellent job reading a poem that she wrote. I was proud of ALL the Shining Diamonds for their excellent audience behavior.
We had an awesome nature hike this afternoon, looking for animal evidence. We saw LOTS of animal tracks and even a squirrel's nest! Ask your child about it! The rumors are true! We had a fox on the playground today who seemed to really settle in. He was not leaving when people went outside, so we had indoor recess to give him plenty of space. Tomorrow we are hoping to go outside for a science lesson, looking for signs of animals, so we will look for his tracks! Please make sure your child has boots tomorrow for this adventure! Thank you!
We learned about how animals survive in winter, and we read a story called Babies in the Bayou about animals that do not need to worry about surviving the cold!
Our essential question for this week is "Where do animals live together?" We are having a blast reading stories about animals and their habitats. Today we took down all of the pumpkins and harvest related decorations in the classroom, and we started making and hanging snowflakes!
Today we made tea! We filled tea bags with a mint tea blend (some of which was grown right here in our school garden), and students are excited to bring it home and share it with family. The kids planned their own Thanksgiving Dinners today in math class. Ask your child about it! Students also took home their Pilgrim Poem Pumpkin Pouches... Enjoy the storytelling!
Have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving! We had a very fun harvest celebration today!!! Students rotated through stations in each of the 1st grade and Readiness classrooms, they had a special snack of homemade donuts and apple cider, and then they enjoyed a concert of fun folk music (by volunteer musician Real Fallu and his son) that we all sang along to. Ask you child all about it!
This week we are focusing on being thankful! Today we wrote about a special person we are thankful for. Ask your child about it!
It was a fun winter wonderland today! Our class did a great job keeping their winter gear organized in the classroom. Please practice putting on and taking off snow clothes independently at home over the weekend! Thank you!!
We had a Three Little Pigs engineering challenge today! Students had to make a shelter for three "pigs" out of toothpicks and marshmallows. Ask your child about it!
Today we compared the stories The Three Little Dassies (by Jan Brett) to the story of The Three Little Pigs. We have been practicing to use the number line to help us solve math problems. We even literally hopped on number lines on the floor of the classroom!
We are learning about buildings and the materials used for building them this week. We built using lots of different kinds of materials today - wooden blocks, legos, cups, yarn, paper, etc. Ask your child what he or she built with!
Scholastic Book Order catalogs went home today. If you would like to order books for the holidays, put your order in online before the end of the month. Thank you! We have a new friend in our class! Welcome, Hunter! Today we learned how to chart the characters, settings, and events in a story. We also read about bird migration, and we did a flying bird craft. Tomorrow we have a spelling test. It is also our PJ dojo reward day!!! Students may wear PJs or any school-and-weather-appropriate cozy clothing.
We reached our dojo goal!!! We have earned over 5,000 points as a class since the beginning of the school year! As a reward, we will have a PJ day on Friday the 9th.
Today we read a book called It's OK to Be Different by Todd Parr, and we had a discussion about not judging people by how they look. Talk with your child about it! We started a new Wonders unit today - all about community! This week we are reading and writing about jobs that need to be done in a community. NO SCHOOL TOMORROW due to voting. Students can log onto their accounts from home to explore our Wonders and Everyday Math games, books, and tutorials!
