We started out doing a "scavenger hunt" to look at all of the materials each child has in his or her school bin. Then we did a fun chant and clapping game to get-to-know each other's names and how many syllables are in each name.
We had fun listening to music and chatting during our snack and lunch times. All of the students found something fun to do at recess, like playing basketball or catch, jumping rope, drawing with sidewalk chalk, or dancing!
We read LOTS of stories, including The Kissing Hand, Lucy's Mask, Chrysanthemum, and Our Class is a Family. We also watched a video of Pete the Cat, Rocking in my School Shoes! We did some yoga, played with play doh, and colored too.
Students learned where the bathroom was and how to use it. They also learned a lot about being safe and responsible by keeping masks on, keeping a safe distance, washing hands often, and cleaning desks and chairs.
It was an absolutely wonderful start to first grade!
