This week we held some of our math classes outside! Students worked together to count tree cookies (big slices of tree) and then they used the tree cookies to create a giant number line. We learned to play two number line games this week: Monster Squeeze and Bunny Hop. Playing math games is a great way to solidify your child's number sense!
We read the book "How Full Is Your Bucket?" and talked about this important metaphor. In first grade, we use the term "bucket fillers" to describe people who are caring and kind. When someone's bucket is full, they feel happy. When someone is having a bad day, they might say their bucket is empty. We will use this terminology to help us discuss our emotional state and how our behavior can affect other people's emotional states. Speaking of emotional support, Ms. Brown, our guidance counselor, also checked in with each of the kids this week to see how they are transitioning into the school year.
We read a fiction story, David Goes to School, and talked about bobcat behavior, and we read a nonfiction story about elephants and learned some elephant facts. We painted paper-plate elephants too! Look for your child's elephant project on Seesaw!
Last of all, we were all scientists this week! We have some painted lady caterpillars in our classroom, and the students did careful observations of those caterpillars. They drew pictures of the caterpillars in special observation notebooks. Ask your child about it!
