This week was full of more getting-to-know-you activities and establishing routines and expectations. We have been counting and comparing numbers in math, playing games like penny-dice, top-it, and monster squeeze to have fun while practicing important skills. We have been reviewing letter sounds and letter formation, and we have been practicing the first 30 sight words on our first grade list. Students will be bringing home a small "caterpillar" booklet with sight words to practice.
Speaking of caterpillars, we are working on a cool project that goes with the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Students are creating storytelling kits and will use a caterpillar puppet to practice retelling the story. So fun!
Some students took home lavender wands today, made by my mom, Maddy Perron. These wands smell absolutely wonderful and have a calming effect when the user holds and sniffs them. We are learning to balance the energy in our classroom, taking calm and peaceful movement breaks when energy is running high, and taking more high-energy breaks when the energy in the classroom feels low. I try to vary our movement breaks to keep things interesting. We have done yoga, guided dancing, stretching, and even cardio desk drumming!
Here we are doing a sun salutation yoga routine this morning:
Thank you to everyone who sent in supplies, like tissues and wipes. That totally filled my bucket! 😉
If you haven't gotten onto Seesaw yet, please do! I am trying to take pictures each day, and I am posting them on Seesaw so you can see what we're up to. It's also a nice conversation starter when you're trying to get info about your child's day!
Have a happy weekend,
Jess Willard
